Today we will begin with a journal prompt: Describe a time in your life (or someone you know) when you were faced with a dilemma that was difficult to decide how to respond. What made it difficult? What thoughts went through your mind? If you could do it all over again, would you change anything? Why/why not? Time: 8 min. Next we will review the vocabulary for ch. 1-4. Your group will be responsible for working together to create a game that includes each word and its meaning. u will play the game to practice for your test on thursday. I will also be doing a journal check on thursday while u take your vocabulary quizzes and do you're lit. circle jobs Homework: Vocabulary from the novel: Study for quiz on Thur. hello! today iu will need a lined piece of paper. label with your name, 8th Lit., and today's date. also, open your journal to tuesdays date and have the vocabulary words in front of you. you will need to use 4 of these words when u answer the questions that i ask about ch. 1 and 2. make sure to elaborate on your answers as thoroughly as you can. be certain to underline or highlight the vocabulary words that u use. Quiz Questions: 1. Who are the three brothers, and how would you describe each one? 2. How would you compare the Socs and the Greasers? 3. Which character do you think you will like the most (or least)? Why? 4. Choose one character to connect to either yourself or someone else that you know or know of. Using the gallery walk as a discussion point, I am going to assign groups to discuss your thinking about each image that you saw. In your discussion: 1. Discuss each image-each person gives at least one piece of input for each 2. Consider what you agree with/disagree with 3. At the end of your discussion, what is your take-away? Then, I will read something aloud to you (SE Hinton). For Discussion: Why do you think the author named the book The Outsiders? When have you ever felt like an outsider? Novel Study: Read: Ch. 1-2 Vocabulary: Use list from Ch. 1-2 (Section 1 List). Place each word into a category (min. of 3 categories..no "other" category. Pull-out Then we will discuss socratic seminar protocol and hold our first socratic seminar. we will begin novel study as well if we have time. today we will begin by sharing our theme songs. I would love some of u to share with the class if u r comfortable. Next, we will revisit the articles we began on Tuesday. Your task list: 1. Highlight or circle all words that you are unfamiliar with and define them (either with your own definition or a picture) 2. Read the article and get the gist of it. Then turn to a buddy in your group who does NOT have the same article, and share your thoughts with them. 3. Re-read and underline the most important sentence from each paragraph. 4. Meet with someone who HAS read the same article you are reading, and see if you agree on the most importance sentences from each paragraph. If not, come to a consensus on which one you would choose if you had to choose only one. Mark that sentence by putting a squiggly line underneath. 5. Go back to the title of the article and determine why you believe the author gave it that title. If you would change it, re-title it. If you like it how it is, give a brief explanation of why you like it next to the title. 6. Summarize the article in one complete paragraph. Then meet with someone who read a DIFFERENT article and give them your summary to read. (Do NOT talk about it...just read each other's summaries). 7. Write any questions or comments you have about their summary in their journal. Sign your name. 8. Prepare for a Socratic seminar in the following manner: (use bookmark below)

Thanks! you will need the following: 1. composition book labeled with your first and last name and titled "8th Literature" 2. enter today's date in you're journal and wait for further instructions. as u wait, think of a song that you really enjoy and feel free to hum or doodle about it as you wait :) today's journal prompt: Date: Focus: Connecting with text/lyrics and THEME Prompt: Think of a song that has lyrics that you connect with. Write the lyrics (or copy and paste later) that you make a connection with. You do NOT have to write the entire song unless you choose to dose. Explain why you chose that particular song as your THEME song and how it connects to your life. Extension: If you could add a verse or line, what would it be? Time: 15 min. (Remember, I am looking for 9 minutes worth of writing). If you would like to add illustration to this, feel free! Next, we will work on a close read activity. Stay tuned. At 11:40 we will go to the computer lab to help the kindergarteners with logins. Homework: Finish your journal prompt from above.
