good morning!
We will begin this morning with a writing prompt instead of WTG review and test because Mrs. Haney will be pulling you individually for reading fluency tests. When she calls you, just leave quickly. Don't worry about what you miss when you are out. Writing Prompt: FIrst, give yourself room to finish our last writing prompt (but we will do that later). The quick prompt we have today will include the video I am about to show you. The prompt for today is this: Date: Focus: Prediction/Creativity Prompt: Number your paper 1-10 (giving yourself about 2 lines between each. After each number, I will pause the video for you to write your prediction or what you think you know about each item. Time: 10 min. Then, we will move on u will have 2 minutes to look over the words. then i will need 2 teams, team captains, team names, and each player numbered. team captains will write the team names on the front board and make sure teams are even. this is to review for your test. Today's agenda: WTG-review and Test Writing-meet in groups to continue Tues. lesson/share Reading-share articles and thoughts. Next: Meet in groups that I assign. You will trade journals and respond to the author with the following: I agree/disagree with _______________(pick a specific point from the writing) because __________________________. Be certain to give specific, meaningful feedback and sign your name. You will repeat in your group until you have responded to each person's writing. Reading: We are going to review CLOSE READ strategies; 1. look at pictures, headlines and think about what you think the text will be about. (do you think you are going to agree?) 2. skim the article for words that you don't know and highlight/underline 3. use dictionary to define unknown words and write your cues on the text 4. read the questions at the end of the article (but don't worry about answer options). This way you get an idea of what you need to look for as you read the article. 5. read the article. Write a brief 1-2 sentence summary at the bottom of each page 6. Write your name in the upper right corner of every single page...feel free to get creative (as long as i can read it!) 7. Find someone to share your article and your thoughts with, and help each other answer the questions (if you have different questions, help each other out, or find someone who has the same questions you have) Make certain you and your buddy agree on each answer. 8. If you finish, please hand it into the pocket by the door. 9. Then you may work on unfinished work, OR Whirly Word, read, Spelling City, write, play a word game (Scrabble etc.) Next: We will meet in mixed groups (one person representing each article). You will have the opportunity to share what you have learned from the article you read. After each person has shared, I would like you to decide what the articles have in common. Is there a theme? Then, we will share Genius Hour ideas using the following code: 938125 Writing Journal: Date: Focus: Persuasion-back your claims up with evidence that would convince even the most staunch opposers Prompt: (2 steps) 1. Make a t-chart. One one side, label it one position, on the other side, the opposite position. For example: Lunch First Recess First 4 Day School Week 5 Day School Week Brainstorm all of the benefits in each column. Then use that information to choose ONE side to support. Knowing the opposing benefits, prove that those benefits aren't as important (or are actually flawed) to prove your point. 2. Write an argument to persuade the audience (Mr. Pratt) that your idea is correct without a shadow of a doubt! Think about what would be convincing in HIS mind! Time: 20 min.
