Dear Students,
Please work on Genius Hour! That's it! :) Let me know if you need anything, and remember you're due date for your essay and "project" is May 15th now because of a change in report card dates. If you can't make that happen, please let me know. I can't wait to learn from you! Love, Mrs. P

My family and I drive each other absolutely crazy but thankfully I’m allowed to go on walks. We were FINALLY able to get to my ELA assignments. Yesterday, I decided I really wanted a blue raspberry slushie from the gas station by my house so I figured I would just walk there. In case you couldn’t tell, artificial sugar crap is one of my favorite things. Anyways, I was walking and it was really nice. The sun was out and the temperature was warm enough that I was perfectly comfortable in my overalls and t-shirt. My converse were kind of hurting my feet so I eventually just took them off and walked barefoot. Everything just seemed kind of surreal. I have to walk through the park by my house to get there the fastest so that’s what I did. It wasn’t like the whole park had changed. The YMCA was still there, and so was the elementary school. It was more just little things that changed it, like the bright yellow caution tape surrounding the playgrounds like they were crime scenes, or how the parking lot to the YMCA is normally full but now it’s emptier than COstco after the toilet paper shortage! It kind of made the whole thing a bit more real, you know? I walked on the grass and it felt really good just having Earth under my feet, instead of carpet or shoes. Then I guess I decided I wanted to take a break because I just layed down and watched the clouds. I love looking at the shapes in the clouds because they aren’t just one thing. There can be so many possibilities. It just depends on the perspective of the person looking at them. I still feel like at least some parts of clouds are made of cotton candy. I know it’s not the truth, but still, sometimes the truth is just a lie we all agree to believe. I started to notice simple things I hadn’t before. The flier soaring across the part as a reminder to stay six feet apart in the light breeze. The tulips starting to bloom, a sign of life in all the chaos. The way the ducks now had mates and never went anywhere without each other. How the grass poked my arms and tickled my neck. After a little while of just enjoying the pure tranquility of it all, I got up and started walking again. That’s when things turned bad. Well not bad, exactly, but the weather took a turn. Don’t get me wrong, I love rain. The way the little water droplets catch any source of light and how the Earth smells after is mesmerizing. But when you wanted to go get a slushie and just enjoy the nice weather, this was kind of a let down. It was just a drizzle so I kept walking, determined to get the sugary syrup poured over ice. Everything was fine until I reached the path that led to Target and the gas station. Then it started really coming down, like a wave of bullets attacking the world. I kept walking but eventually sat under a tree to avoid it. I don’t know why, but despite the downpour, I wasn’t cold. Maybe it was from running out of the rain, maybe it was from the relief of knowing nature was still the same. I decided to just face the rain because I really really wanted a slushie. Then I had to think about the fact that to get slushies, you had to touch a handle. They probably didn’t have them. But then I had an idea that certainly wasn’t as good as a blue raspberry slushie but was still pretty decent. I went to target and straight to the freezer section. I got a reminder from multiple employees to not touch things unless I had to. After the fourth time, I had to resist the urge to say, “No, I’m gonna lick all the shelves and handles!” I grabbed Ben and Jerry’s frozen cookie dough and checked out as fast as possible. The rain had stopped and the sun was starting to set. The clouds really did look like cotton candy, a soft pink field against a light orange and baby blue sky. The sun was at the point in the day where it was starting to fall and it’s color went from obnoxiously bright to a soft gold. I turned on my music. I have no idea why but listening to music makes me even more aware of what’s happening around me. It also makes me think of multiple movie scenes that would be fun to create, but that’s besides the point. I put the plaid shirt I had tied around my waist on the ground and then sat on top of it and ate cookie dough while watching the sun set. I also wrote a few poems. I’ve been doing that a lot lately.
